Male Breast Disorders – Gynecomastia

Men may develop abnormal enlargement of the breast(s), known as gynecomastia. The most common underlying cause is due to pubertal spurts. This is usually not reversible even with weight loss as most men falsely believe. Although this condition is technically not a disease we do understand that psychologically it is disturbing to a young man.

Other causes of breast enlargement in men are due to abnormal secretions of female hormones due to an underlying endocrinological disorder.

Treatment: Any underlying problems will be managed by the endocrinologist. Correction of the enlarged breasts is by various surgical techniques ranging in complexity from simple liposuction to complex breast reduction techniques. The technique utilised depends on the severity of gynecomastia presented. Dr Radhika has a special interest in this area apart from cancer surgery.
